Tian Teng's series "The Shape of Unseen" prompts us to contemplate what often slips our notice: the exteriors of the buildings where we reside, work, shop, dine, and unwind. While most paintings position us as mere observers, pondering the enigma of what lies within, certain windows beckon passersby to step inside. Conversely, some window coverings act as deterrents, deflecting light and prying gazes from without. The titles of these works derive from the postal codes of the buildings, subtly emphasizing the series' predominantly Dutch essence. To those well-acquainted with Dutch urban landscapes, the houses and facades depicted might appear familiar or even mundane. However, in her series, Tian Teng emphasizes the distinct essence of these facades and the narratives concealed behind them. This fascination fuels the artist, who hails from China, and forms the focal point of her exploration within her paintings.
