The present artwork comes from Erik de Bree's Wallpaper Paintings series, and it begins with a white wallpaper as its foundation. During the process, the artist creates a gradient on the "white canvas" using an abstract composition of lines. Once the wallpaper is affixed to the panel, he lays it horizontally, then meticulously cut lines into the paper with a sharp knife. Following that step, de Bree prepares a mixture of water and black ink to wash over the entire surface. The ink permeates the lines, causing the top layer of paper to loosen. Once this process is complete, the artist has the opportunity to peel back sections of the loosened paper and fold them over. All of the above actions occur in one swift, deliberate motion. There is no room for retracing or undoing any steps. Ultimately, the outcome is either a success or a failure. This artistic approach imparts a dynamic and vibrant aesthetic to this specific series.
